Banu Manoharan, a tech architect and co-founder of Maharaja Indian Cuisine, embodies the spirit of innovation and cultural preservation, inspiring others to pursue their dreams while embracing diverse interests.
Banu’s culinary journey began in childhood, with mornings filled with the hum of a blender and the comforting aroma of freshly made chutney, a spread made from chopped fruits or vegetables, spices, and vinegar. These moments, paired with the taste of soft idly, fluffy South Indian steamed cakes made from fermented rice and lentil batter, laid the foundation for a lifelong passion for food. Learning recipes from her aunt and grandmother, Banu recreated cherished family dishes that now serve as a bridge to her heritage. For her, cooking is a homage to her roots and a source of joy and creativity. Today, she continues to explore new recipes and techniques, sharing the mouthwatering flavors of Indian cuisine with the Omaha community.
Banu co-founded Maharaja Indian Cuisine with her partner, Geeta Chokkara. Together, they have created a space where authentic Indian flavors and traditions thrive, offering Omaha a taste of cultural richness and culinary excellence. For Banu, the restaurant represents a labor of love and a platform for sharing her innovative spirit and managerial skills.
Beyond the kitchen, Banu finds joy in staying active and productive. Her love for learning and innovation extends to every aspect of her life, from tackling new tech projects to transforming gatherings into extraordinary culinary experiences. Confidence and resilience have helped her navigate life in a new culture and language while growing out Maharaja through challenges, even during global uncertainty.
Recently, Banu teamed up with Chef Sudarsan Bashkaran and his wife, Bhuvana, whose shared passion and expertise align with her vision for the restaurant. This collaboration promises to bring exciting innovations and fresh perspectives to Omaha’s Maharaja Indian Cuisine.
